Open Pantry Food Drive
The Rotary Club conducted a
Food Drive on October 28 to benefit the Open Pantry.
People were asked to bring non-perishable items, (tuna fish, beans,
Spam, cereals, stews, juice, soups, pastas, rice, canned meats and fruit, etc. as
well as blankets.

10th Anniversary/ Charter Night

The
Rotary Club of Longmeadow recently celebrated its 10th Anniversary / Charter Night at
Chez Josef. Club members, family and friends came together for a night of
celebration. Rotary District 7890 District Governor Susan Atkins offered
congratulations to the Club and wished them continued success.
The
keynote speaker was Frank Collins, past District Governor and Senior Rotary Representative
to the United Nations, who spoke about Rotary International's role in the United Nation
and the world as a whole. He told of Polio Plus, a Rotary initiative that will hopefully
eradicate polio worldwide in the next five years. He also spoke about other Rotary
projects, (literacy projects, water quality projects, etc.), which are
helping to make the world a better place.
Rotarians
Tom Wheeler and Barbara Burati reviewed the Club's accomplishments of the past ten years.
These include:
The
building and dedication of the Molly's Gift Playground at Greenwood Park which honors
Molly McEvoy, a brave little girl who helped to bring a community together.
Held two
Songs for Seats concerts which raised over $8,000 to repair broken or damaged seats in
the Longmeadow High School Auditorium.
Establishment
and awarding of the Longmeadow Rotary Scholarship to a Longmeadow High School senior.
Donated
$1,000 to the YWCA's Women's Shelter to help establish a children's library.
Establishing an
Interact Club, (a service club for high school students sponsored by Rotary
International), at Longmeadow High School.
Annually
sponsoring three high school sophomores to attend RYLA, (the Rotary
Youth Leadership Award).
Held
a number of blood drives for Mercy Hospital and the Red Cross.
Held
food drives that benefit The Open Pantry in Springfield.
Co-sponsored
an annual Golf Tournament for several years with the Longmeadow chapter
of ABC, (A Better Chance), to raise funds for both groups.
Donated Christmas
baskets to the YWCA Women's Shelter.
Presentation
of the Rotary Speakers Forum which is filmed and televised on Longmeadow Cable Television.
Several individual
awards were presented at Charter Night:
The
Rotary Club of Longmeadow presented a Paul Harris Fellow to Jay Leib, immediate past
president, in recognition of his work as President.
Rotarian
Peter Benton presented a Paul Harris Fellow to his wife Betsy Brigham Benton.
The
Gay Family presented a Paul Harris Award to Harley Dulue.
Club
awards were presented to several Rotarians in recognition of their dedication to the Club
and the community. Recipients include:
